Cosplay: Diesel Punk Captain America

24 Mar

Last month, I headed out to Joshua Tree for the afternoon with some of my friends to take fun photos of cosplay we had been hoarding away but never got good photos of! Here’s my first set, appropriately just in time before the opening of Captain America: The Winter Soldier! I did a Diesel Punk Captain America costume for San Diego Comic Con 2012, wore it for about.. oh… 3 hours before I deemed it too hot and uncomfortable and it was ruining my life, haha! That’s what I get for making shorts out of upholstery-thickness vinyl! I handmade the corset, shorts, straps, armbands, and gloves. A lot of rivets, and a lot of D-rings went into this, haha. I hand painted the “A” and Capt America wings on the hat, and dyed and distressed the straps and harness. It wasn’t terribly hard to make, but a little warm in the butt, which I’ll have to be careful of for next time, haha! Anyway, I’m glad I’m able to share these photos with you guys now, thanks to the wonderful Laurie of Lauren Elisabeth Photography. I hope you all appreciate how TOTES PATRIOTIC I am trying to be in these photos, haha. GO AMERICA!

One of my photos was used for this event that’s coming up this Thursday in Los Angeles! Stan Lee just retweeted it, so I’m sorta psyched for that, too. Hope to see you guys there!

A Sailor Moon Bridesmaid Proposal: Will you be my Sailor Soldier on my wedding day?

28 Jan

The “Bridesmaid Proposal:” In the flurry of having to pick out every little detail for my wedding,  I knew I wanted to put aside some time to make a special moment of asking my friends if they would accept the position of being my bridesmaid.

As important as things like linen colors, appetizer choices, and wedding dresses are, your bridesmaids are really the last line of defense against total meltdowns on your big day. I’ve run interference as a bridesmaid a few times, and already know that…. I will DEFINITELY need some linebackers (sports analogies, ugh I know, sorry!).  It was really, truly, hard to just pick four girls, so after sitting on it for 3 months, I finally got up the nerve to ask my ladies. I wanted to say thanks-in-advance and mark the day that I asked my friends to be bridesmaids with something special, so crafting a “proposal” gift sounded just about right.

I googled some ideas online, and combined a few together, while adding a little Sailor Moon nerdiness to the design, using Illustrator (since yes, my wedding will have something to do with Sailor Moon… more on that later!).

Sailor Moon Friendship Power… MAKE UP!

I got these cute pink holographic boxes at Daiso (everything $1.50 store), but they only had different sizes, haha. WHATEVER!

Each box had a personal letter (not pictured), a Sailor Senshi key chain, a scroll of “bridesmaid’s duties” I Googled and print out, little cards that explain their role, their dress, and our day, and a little bottle of bath salts. The cute holographic and striped paper is also from Daiso, in their origami section. The bath salts I got from Target, and the little cards I just printed on thick sketch paper and cut down with patterned scissors or paper punches.

The lids of the boxes. Cut out some hearts on metallic star paper and mounted it on holographic paper.

FYI, these are the new Sailor Moon keychains they just released for the 20th anniversary promotion in Japan. You can get sets of them on eBay and Amazon.com! The tags say, “Fight for Love and Justice with me!”

Detail of the Sailor Jupiter box:

Sailor Mars box detail:

The little cards pull out and have descriptions of each item.. just gonna keep that under wraps since that info is private/a surprise/magical girl business only, haha.

Sailor Mercury Box detail. I added bubble scallops to these cards since… BUBBLE POWER! Also, I just happened to have the punch leftover from my last project, haha.

Sailor Venus Box detail:

The boxes didn’t really take too long to make, and I’m happy I made time for it! This is probably my last wedding activity for a little while as I get back to the real world for a bit (i.e. Cosplay, haha). If you have any questions on anything, please feel free to comment!

Also, if you haven’t seen it yet, you can check out my Shojou Manga Engagement Party post ❤

A Shojo Manga-inspired event: Our Labu Labu Sparkle Romance Engagement Party

26 Nov

Last weekend, my fiance Will and I celebrated our engagement with a shoujo manga (Japanese girls’ comics)-themed party, complete with manga DIY decorations, a magical cake, and all of our wonderful friends.

Will and I met in Japan, while we were living there teaching English for a few years. Our friends joked about how our relationship was like a corny shoujo manga story, which is where we got the idea for our theme! We are nerds through and through, and wanted to celebrate that along with our friends! (BTW “Labu labu” is a Japanese onomatopoeia word for being in love… la—bu.)

Like many brides-to-be, I spent a ridiculous amount of time scouring the internet for ideas on how to decorate our small venue on a non-existing budget, as well as incorporate our nerdy little theme. Luckily, there are already plenty of photos of vintage book crafts online, that I adapted to fit the size of the smaller manga books I was using. Here’s a little recap of the decorations- at the very bottom are some links on how to make a few of the items and descriptions. Some items are sort of straight forward if you look at them though! Enjoy!

Hanky Panky x Hello Kitty Launch Party!

18 May

A ton of readers have been asking me about the lingerie line for Hanky Panky x Hello Kitty ever since I posted photos of their lookbook that featured the Chubby Bunny bow on their models! Just last weekend, Hanky Panky celebrated the launch of the line with a fun and fancy Hello Kitty party in SoHo!

Unfortunately I was unable to attend, but Hanky Panky posted up the photos on their Facebook, so I’m sharing them here 🙂 Also, if you want to purchase anything from Hanky Panky’s new line, you can check out their website store, which JUST added the Hello Kitty items!

The launch celebrated not only Hanky Panky’s new lingerie, but also the Humane Society, which will receive a portion of the sales of these products. Sephora also chipped in at this event, providing giveaways and promotion.

The event was also featured in the Wall Street Journal today! How awesome!

My Glamorous Pony: Opening night of “My Little Pony Project: Los Angeles”

15 May

On Saturday, May 5th, the long awaited opening for the “My Little Pony Night Out” finally arrived! Sweet Streets curated the show for Hasbro and Mighty Fine which drew in hundreds of fans from all over! The event was tailored to My Little Pony crowds of old and new! Giant blank Ponies were sent out to artists all over the world to customize and sell for this show. Tons of my artist friends had pieces in the show, so I was super amped to see what they had come up with!

I went to the gallery on the Thursday before the opening to help with setup and go to clean pony butts and comb pony hair all afternoon. The ponies had been shipped in from all over the world, so they needed proper styling help and readjusting once they were situated on their pony pedestals. (Every word I am typing is getting more and more surreal to me as I go along, haha.) It was totally amazing.

Combing manes. No big deal.

Some photos of the AMAZING ponies that artists had customized. These pictures don’t even do them justice.

That afternoon we also stuffed some giftbags for the press night they were holding on Friday. These bags are normally available via Mightyfine.com’s site when you purchase a t-shirt. They’re enormous and so cute! Love that engineer-looking Rainbow Dash!

I’ve been waiting for a chance to do a fancy Princess Celestia cosplay ever since I started watching the Friendship is Magic version of My Little Pony, and this event was totally the perfect opportunity for it! So, I had been working my little hands off on my Gatsby dress, as well as the Hello Kitty Sephora dress, so making time for this dress was pretty stressful towards the end there..! It was my first time working with such gauzy chiffon material (and actually hemming it.. usually I’m lazy and just double it up or burn it haha), so it was a bit tricky at first but I got it!

Craft Box: May Costume Madness: Hello Kitty, My Little Pony, Great Gatsby!

1 May

I’ve been working super hard these past couple of weeks on 3 projects at once!

After this week I’ll be able to do a full reveal on everything, but for now… some sneak peeks ❤

I’m doing another Hello Kitty mascot costume for an upcoming launch somewhere special this month….. It’s the first time I’ve made jewelry for Ms. Kitty, too!

Purr-ly and pretty for Ms. Kitty, hehe.

I am also very excited about the My Little Pony Project, which I will be helping out with a little bit, and am working on an epic Princess Celestia outfit to wear to the opening event! I hope to see all of you guys there ❤

Princess Celestia character that I'm taking inspiration from for my outfit!

Pretty and soft materials I'm prepping for my outfit!

And of course, at the end of this week, my BIRTHDAY will be arriving! I will be turning the big 30, so I’m doing a “Great Gatsby”-themed birthday party, to celebrate the end of my “roaring 20s”, so to speak! I even made a stupid little image for it, haha.

I was able to finish up this EPIC dress to wear for my birthday last week! Just have to work on the accessories now!

Can’t wait to share final photos of all of my projects with everyone! I just had to post a few progress photos because I am SUPER excited for this week and these projects!!!

Craft Box: Lumpy Space Princess Cosplay

19 Mar

This past weekend I attended Wondercon over in Anaheim for some wonderfully nerdy fun! I was mainly excited because on Saturday, there was an Adventure Time panel featuring creator Pendleton Ward, Finn’s voice actor Jeremy Shada, and a bunch of the animators, directors, and storyboarders who make that awesome magic happen.

I was originally planning a fairly complex Pancake Princess costume, but was so swamped the week before, I opted for an easy version of my favorite character, Lumpy Space Princess (or LSP for short)!

In the series she’s a big ‘ol lump of floating purple mass, so I just took notes on her purple puffiness, her gold star, and her valley girl tacky attitude and went to town! She talks about the “weekly Promcoming Dance,” in her first episode “Trouble in Lumpy Space” (click to watch), so I ran with that, and made myself LUMPY SPACE HIGH PROMCOMING QUEEN! haha. (Gratuitous Nerd Note: I would also like to add that Pendleton Ward tweeted at me, saying he liked my LSP outfit. kekekek. #nerdingouttttt)

All dressed up as Lumpy Space Princess! Puffy face in photos is MANDATORY!

Hair and makeup! Made a "stencil" using a decorative paper punch on a label sticker, then sticking it to my eye and putting shadow on for the "lumpy bubble" effect!

Photos of how I made the outfit, accessories, and hair, plus some fun snaps from Wondercon after the jump!
