There isn’t a French bone in my body, except for the fact that my Dad grew up in the French speaking region of Vietnam, my cousins from his side of the family all grew up in Paris, and my brother moved to France about 5 years ago and still lives there with his glamorously-accented girlfriend Loren. (Impromptu look into my past! whoo!)
That said, I love the French tunes of Yelle.
I don’t know if it’s the language geek in me, or the part of me that’s a lover of all things technicolor. Their videos show a fun style of solid colors and patterns reminiscent of our 80’s childhood. Combine that with danceable beats, hilarious (once you translate from French) lyrics, a cutie pie, bob-haired front woman, and two male band mates that are constantly dressed as random weird objects (clocks, polygon wolves, cell phones, you name it), and you have a recipe for a fun-to-follow band.
Je Veux Te Voir was their first big hit, and in my opinion, their best to date. Created to mock French rapper Cuizinier, of the group TTC, the original title was, Short Dick Cuizi, which gained them an enormous following on MySpace and soon launched them to fame in 2005.
The full hilarity of the lyrics from Je Veux can be found here.
I’m a little late on the boat here, but it looks like Katy Perry collaborated with them previously as well, asking them to do a rendition of her song Hot N Cold. Who knew! (Not really a fan, but it’s notable they did such a big collab at least.)
I’m no music expert, but I do appreciate bands that don’t take themselves too seriously, if anything. As long as you stay fashionable, people!
