My Glamorous Pony: Opening night of “My Little Pony Project: Los Angeles”

15 May

On Saturday, May 5th, the long awaited opening for the “My Little Pony Night Out” finally arrived! Sweet Streets curated the show for Hasbro and Mighty Fine which drew in hundreds of fans from all over! The event was tailored to My Little Pony crowds of old and new! Giant blank Ponies were sent out to artists all over the world to customize and sell for this show. Tons of my artist friends had pieces in the show, so I was super amped to see what they had come up with!

I went to the gallery on the Thursday before the opening to help with setup and go to clean pony butts and comb pony hair all afternoon. The ponies had been shipped in from all over the world, so they needed proper styling help and readjusting once they were situated on their pony pedestals. (Every word I am typing is getting more and more surreal to me as I go along, haha.) It was totally amazing.

Combing manes. No big deal.

Some photos of the AMAZING ponies that artists had customized. These pictures don’t even do them justice.

That afternoon we also stuffed some giftbags for the press night they were holding on Friday. These bags are normally available via Mightyfine.com’s site when you purchase a t-shirt. They’re enormous and so cute! Love that engineer-looking Rainbow Dash!

I’ve been waiting for a chance to do a fancy Princess Celestia cosplay ever since I started watching the Friendship is Magic version of My Little Pony, and this event was totally the perfect opportunity for it! So, I had been working my little hands off on my Gatsby dress, as well as the Hello Kitty Sephora dress, so making time for this dress was pretty stressful towards the end there..! It was my first time working with such gauzy chiffon material (and actually hemming it.. usually I’m lazy and just double it up or burn it haha), so it was a bit tricky at first but I got it!

Craft Box: May Costume Madness: Hello Kitty, My Little Pony, Great Gatsby!

1 May

I’ve been working super hard these past couple of weeks on 3 projects at once!

After this week I’ll be able to do a full reveal on everything, but for now… some sneak peeks <3

I’m doing another Hello Kitty mascot costume for an upcoming launch somewhere special this month….. It’s the first time I’ve made jewelry for Ms. Kitty, too!

Purr-ly and pretty for Ms. Kitty, hehe.

I am also very excited about the My Little Pony Project, which I will be helping out with a little bit, and am working on an epic Princess Celestia outfit to wear to the opening event! I hope to see all of you guys there <3

Princess Celestia character that I'm taking inspiration from for my outfit!

Pretty and soft materials I'm prepping for my outfit!

And of course, at the end of this week, my BIRTHDAY will be arriving! I will be turning the big 30, so I’m doing a “Great Gatsby”-themed birthday party, to celebrate the end of my “roaring 20s”, so to speak! I even made a stupid little image for it, haha.

I was able to finish up this EPIC dress to wear for my birthday last week! Just have to work on the accessories now!

Can’t wait to share final photos of all of my projects with everyone! I just had to post a few progress photos because I am SUPER excited for this week and these projects!!!

Craft Box: Lumpy Space Princess Cosplay

19 Mar

This past weekend I attended Wondercon over in Anaheim for some wonderfully nerdy fun! I was mainly excited because on Saturday, there was an Adventure Time panel featuring creator Pendleton Ward, Finn’s voice actor Jeremy Shada, and a bunch of the animators, directors, and storyboarders who make that awesome magic happen.

I was originally planning a fairly complex Pancake Princess costume, but was so swamped the week before, I opted for an easy version of my favorite character, Lumpy Space Princess (or LSP for short)!

In the series she’s a big ‘ol lump of floating purple mass, so I just took notes on her purple puffiness, her gold star, and her valley girl tacky attitude and went to town! She talks about the “weekly Promcoming Dance,” in her first episode “Trouble in Lumpy Space” (click to watch), so I ran with that, and made myself LUMPY SPACE HIGH PROMCOMING QUEEN! haha. (Gratuitous Nerd Note: I would also like to add that Pendleton Ward tweeted at me, saying he liked my LSP outfit. kekekek. #nerdingouttttt)

All dressed up as Lumpy Space Princess! Puffy face in photos is MANDATORY!

Hair and makeup! Made a "stencil" using a decorative paper punch on a label sticker, then sticking it to my eye and putting shadow on for the "lumpy bubble" effect!

Photos of how I made the outfit, accessories, and hair, plus some fun snaps from Wondercon after the jump!

DIY: A Boom Box Can Save The World

19 Jun

I recently customized a boom box for a photoshoot I did with Yume Ninja for Bubble Punch. We had a pair of cool pink headphones, but wanted to have another piece of matching equipment to add to the shoot. Hence, the Bubble Punch boom box was born.

This is super easy, and maybe doesn’t even merit a DIY blog about it, but the idea is really cool, and I’m sure lots of us have old equipment laying around that would look a lot better customized!

Step 1: Using painter's tape (or any medium stick tape), tape off the areas of the stereo that you would like to remain black. Use and X-acto knife to cut around the buttons so it looks clean when spraypainted.

Step 2: After cutting the tape, peel off the excess.

Step 3: To make letters on the stereo that look clean, I printed them out on regular paper, then cut them out.

Step 4: Spray the back of the letters with spray mount and attach to the stereo where you want them. (If you have photo spray mount, that would be best because the stick is weak enough that it won't permanantly attach the letters there and tear off later on).

Step 5: Spray the boom box with your desired color all over! It takes a few coats. Do one coat, and let it dry before applying on others.

Step 6: When paint is completely dry, peel off the tape and letters carefully. I had some glue residue from the letters after I peeled them off, so I just covered it up with a black sharpie. You can also touch up the edges of your letters if they're not sharp enough with the same method.

DONE! You now have an epic customize boom box!

Shannon Cottrell shot myself and Yume Ninja last week, and the boom box looked great! Here's a teaser pic for now... The rest are coming soon!

The Dress Show: A wild chubby bunny appears…

13 May

This past Saturday, May 8th, I totally popped my gallery cherry and participated in a group artists’ show, titled “The Dress Show.”

A delicate onion dress fit for a fancy gnome, by Dawn Anderson

Curated by Dawn Anderson, the show focused on art as it relates to clothing, and vice versa. Clothing-as-art was the focus of all the artists who participated in this event which also featured live bands!

I was very flattered to be asked to participate in this gallery show. Normally, the work I do falls in the category of (perhaps “extreme”) fashion, and not “art.” It was definitely strange to be approached by guests as an “artist,” and I felt a little bit like someone posing as an artist! But, inner monologue aside, my work was really well received, and I believe I have Dawn to thank for that, for sticking me on the front of the flyer ahead of time!

It was a nice feeling to have my work appreciated as opposed to worn and then stumbled around in all night, ha! There were other great works at the show, too, but I wonder if anyone has ever actually worn them? Hmm!

My circus outfit was originally created for the “Cirque du So Lame” themed party hosted by Zippercut. Wanting to make something entirely insane, I was inspired by Manish Arora’s exquisite carousel dress from his Spring/Summer 2009 line. When I make costumes for themed events, I tend to get a little too crazy with detail, and also to take a very, very literal approach. This outfit was definitely no exception.

My "Cirque du So Lame" piece.

I turned myself into a human circus tent for a night, complete with tigers, elephants, clowns, and trapeze artists! Some other items I chose to include were lights around the “stage” at the front of the skirt and hat, as well as fanciful gold tassels and gold stars and roses to complete the look.

The infrastructure of the dress was created using illustration board, wooden dowels, this wonderfully ruffled fabric I found downtown, and a lot of fuzzy geometry (“fuzzy,” as in, “I am bad at math so there were a lot of mistakes at first”).

The outcome was really great, and I was really happy to be able to show the garment again at this event. The “Cirque du So Lame” dress is still on display at Pehrspace Gallery until next month, so stop by if you’d like to take a look! I am also selling this item, so if you’re interested, please drop me a line!

Thanks again to everyone who showed up and supported me in my first show! This won’t be my last, though… Stay tuned for some more exciting Chubby Bunny announcements later this week!

DIY: How to be the best girlfriend ever. Baked Eggs and Ai no Bento!

2 Mar
Will’s birthday was last Wednesday, so I woke up bright and early to prepare him a lovely breakfast in bed, and also to make him a super fun bento :)

DIY: How to Breakfast! Baked Eggs with Bunny Toast

1) Get two ramekins, and put in about 1/2 a tblspoon of butter and 1 tablespoon of milk or cream in each/ put in the broiler and let melt. Take ramekins out of broiler. Then, place 2 eggs in each. If you’re a ham lover, put in 2 pieces of lunch meat ham at the bottom of the ramekin before putting in the egg. Add a bit of salt and pepper.

2) Top the eggs with your choice of thyme, rosemary, oregano, cheese (I used mild cheddar), and lots of green onion. Place the ramekins back in the broiler for 15 to 25 minutes, until yolks are slightly firm

3) While ramekins are in the broiler, toast some bread. You can take any shape cookie cutter to make cute shapes once the toast is ready. I made some small bunny bread bites!

4) When eggs are done, take out of broiler, and let sit for 3 minutes. Place on a plate with the toast bites, and service! ta da!

DIY: 愛の弁当の作り方! How to Ai no Bento! (Love Bento!)

1) Steal flat-ish tupperware from roommate. Hope he doesn’t notice. Line one side with lettuce or spinach. For the other side, I prepped “containers” for the onigiri using round pieces of wax paper that I taped the sides up of. You can also use cupcake papers for this, I was just too cheap to buy them hehe.

2) Prepare omelette: I made Japanese-style sweet omlettes, which is simply 1 egg, 1 tablespoon of dashi, and 2 teaspoons of sugar whipped up and put into a pan. Usually sweet omlettes are rolled, but to make shapes, I kept it flat. (Right around this time, the broiler had set off the fire alarm, so while I was running around trying to turn it off, the eggs has cooked flat anyway haha). When soft and firm, take out of pan and place on cutting board to let cool for about 3 minutes. Then, I used bunny bread press molds and pressed bunny and bear shapes into the omlette. (yours shouldn’t be QUITE as burny as this one..)

3) I had grilled some beef tenderloin the night before for dinner, so I took the leftovers and sliced them up to put in the bento. You can add any protein to the bento, though. Tiny chicken wings are a popular thing to throw in, too! I also sliced up some carrots into mini carrots. I was originally planning to put green “stalks” onto the carrots using broccoli, but I had run out of time…! If you like, you can also divide the meat and vegetables using a piece of wax paper.

4) For the left side, I made some round onigiri to decorate. Onigiri rice is simply regular white rice, cooled, and mixed with a dash of salt, and some rice vinegar. I’ve seen onigiri rice prepared several different ways in my time in Japan, so pick the kind you like the best :) I mixed the rice up, then dipped my hands in a bowl of water so the rice wouldn’t stick to them as I grabbed the rice. Next, I grabbed a fistful of rice and packed it into a small ball. I made 3 to make our “family.” I decorated the onirigi using dry seaweed that I cut up using plain kitchen scissors (make sure they are dry!) I made an onigiri tha tlooked like Will, me, and our guinea pig, Niblet.

5) I had the bright idea to try to make a little EVA from Wall-E out of a hard boiled egg, haha. I saw it in this other bento, and threw it in at the last minute. I boiled an egg the night before and stuck it in the fridge over night. I took it out, and sliced off the top 3rd of the egg. Then I took little chunks out under each “arm”, and added an oval onto the face. The oval is just a small piece of dry seaweed. I had to wet it a little bit to get it to stick to the egg. Sooooort of ghetto, but it’s the AI in the AI NO BENTO that counts!

6) Here’s a pic of the onigiri and egg together!

7) and that’s it! I added another piece of waxpaper on top of the bento before I closed it up so that the stuff inside wouldn’t roll around too much. I also gave Will a bottle of Kewpie Mayo for his birthday haha.

The end!
