LOS ANGELES, CA – Chubby Bunny and JapanLA are proud to announce the much anticipated art and fashion event Bunnies & Bows.
Nineteen artists from around the world have created new work for the show based on the theme of “Bunnies & Bows,” each bringing their own unique outlook to the canvas for this fantastic show. theme, which resulted in works that range from playful and cute, to dark and subversive. This exhibition features a group of artists handpicked not only for their extraordinary talent, but for their incredible influence on curator and designer Michelle Nguyen, also known as Chubby Bunny.
Along with art, Chubby Bunny will debuting her Summer 2011 line of accessories and clothing at this event, featuring live models, and special introductory prices to attendees on opening night. Chubby Bunny is also exhibiting a last-look retrospective of her previous work, both fashion and art-related. After this show, many of the pieces will be permanently dismantled or sold, so it will be the last chance to see her infamous past artistic creations in person.
To celebrate this incredible mixed media exhibition, there will be an opening party on May 7th, 2011, from 7pm to 10pm at JapanLA, 7320 1/2 Melrose Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90046.
Attendees will be treated to an evening filled with fun activities and surprises, including music spun by DJ R-Rated, photography by Eron Rauch, complimentary refreshments, food trucks, and an exciting “Bunnies & Bows”-themed costume contest, where contestants can win exclusive Chubby Bunny products and Sugarpill cosmetics.
Opening Night Features:
- JapanLA’s store front will feature a handcrafted window installation, designed and installed by Chubby Bunny.
- Live models
- “Bunnies & Bows”-themed costume contest, with prizes awarded to the most creative attendees who use the theme and their own originality in their outfits. All ages eligible. Prizes include gifts from Chubby Bunny, Sugarpill Makeup, & more.
- Lil’ Rae Cakes’ cake balls, with specially commissioned treats for the event

About Chubby Bunny:
Chubby Bunny, a.k.a. Michelle Nguyen, makes accessories that are cute, daring, and a little bit tubby. Fat and cute, Chubby Bunny bows are aesthetically adorable and fashionable all at once. Chubby Bunny also creates the officially-licensed, quintessential “Hello Kitty Bow,” made in conjunction with Sanrio.
A native of Pittsburgh, Michelle moved to Japan for three years and traveled throughout Asia before arriving in Los Angeles. Having written extensively on fashion both in the US and Japan, Michelle acted as an editor of the English language version of Gothic & Lolita Bible magazine. She has moved on to creating her own original clothing and accessories under the moniker “I am Chubby Bunny,” with items that are heavily influenced by Japanese culture. Michelle also co-owns the event production company Bubble Punch, while doing freelance consulting and construction for retail interiors and displays.
About JapanLA:
Japan L.A. is a little store off Melrose Ave., in Los Angeles. It was started by a girl named Jamie, who wanted to create a store where people could buy cute stuff, inspired by Japanese and L.A. pop culture. You can find lots of unique gifts and t-shirts with Japanese pop culture inspired characters and graphics
